Understanding Plagiarism: a  Lesson and an Assignment

1. Visit How to Recognize Plagiarism from Indiana University. Visit (or revisit) sections using the links below-this can be helpful if you need to retake the test-review on the sections that gave you the most trouble.

2.  Required:  Take the Test. Keep taking it until you get 9 right.

3.  Print the Certificate and turn it in to your clinical instructor.

This test will help teach you how to avoid these mistakes in your own work. Better to struggle with this quiz than to make a mistakes later with real consequences!  Don't feel bad if you don't pass the first time-it took your friendly neighborhood librarian three tries to pass this quiz!  Here are some tips from my experience so you can avoid my mistakes and save time:

  • Do not rely on "common sense" or knowing that "plagiarism is bad" to pass.  Learn the definitions of plagiarism and the correct way to cite your sources before taking the test. You need to identify the presence and type of plagiarism.
  • Questions change every time you take the test and you are not shown corrected answers.  You can't simply guess, learn the correct answers and then retake it to pass!
  • Pay close attention to the original sources, how they are used, and the details of the citations in the examples.
  • Make sure that the citations given in the examples are absolutely correct-for this test citation mistakes are considered plagiarism.
  • If you use seven or more words from a source you must directly quote it. Check indirect quotes in the examples for phrases from the original source!
  • Confused?  The Examples section shows types of plagiarism and what correct citations look like
  • The Practice Test gives feedback; the real test does not. The Practice Test will help you identify what areas you're having trouble with and will show you how the Test is organized and what correct answers look like
